Assignment 1
I talked with 2 professionals from the school that I work and here is some of the information that they gave me. Poverty affects so many aspects of education with oral language development being one of the major predictors of reading ability in the upper grades. Good language models and experiences are necessary before children enter school. Research shows (Hart & Risley) that children in low socio-economic homes are exposed to fewer words. They may also have less exposure to books and experiences (such as the zoo, museums, etc.). Poverty is always a subgroup that needs help and support.

I think these are all good and solid ideas. I've read about the link between low socioeconomic status and fewer words in the vocabulary a few times in my classes at Kendall. What ideas do you have about advocacy for this topic? What solutions do you see? How can you ask our politicians for help and in what ways?
ReplyDeleteI think poverty is a great idea to research about. You could talk about assistance programs that go along with helping poverty. Or even educational programs like Head Start that help a lot of low socio-economic families. Pwverty is pretty wide spread so it may take some brainstorming to decide.
ReplyDeleteSara,
ReplyDeleteIn some areas in major cites, the epidemic of poverty has and continues to run rapidly. We need to have more people who are willing to take on the war on poverty and be a spokesperson for the children and parents who do not have adequate resources for materials that will help young minds to develop and grow. I know that your passion will make a difference to many children.
Good for you!
